do u ever listen to a band and think, “i want to exist the way this band sounds”
The Pyranas in San Francisco for the 1978 Sex Pistols gig.
The Pyranas were a punk all-girl gang in the days of the early Hollywood punk scene, created out of a night of heavy drinking by Alice Bag, a member of The Bags and later on of Castration Squad, along some of her friends who tended to be a bit more sexually aggressive and confrontational than the norm, such as Shannon Wilhelm (also of Castration Squad) and Margo Olaverria and Jane Wiedlin (both initial members of The Go-Go’s).
“Punk has been portrayed as music by and for angry white males but in its inception, it was a rebellion against all rock cliches. Gender, ethnic, sexual and class taboos were all challenged by our early Punk community and that is a story which is not very often told.
People of color, queer folk, women – all were present from the very beginning of Punk”
Alice Bag
